MoAD (Museum of Australian Democracy)
MoAD (Museum of Australian Democracy)
Driven by an inquiry approach, our Australian curriculum aligned programs empower young people to become informed, active, and engaged citizens.
Learning Overview
Our vision is to engage young people in the importance of active participation – to celebrate the spirit of Australia’s democracy and the power of their voice within it. Essential to achieving this vision is our role as a leading educational institution providing safe opportunities for deep engagement in the ideas and practices of democracy and civic engagement.
Our programs provide unique inquiry-based learning experiences that explore what it means to be an informed and engaged citizen.
MoAD delivers school programs to more than 85,000 students and teachers each year and is one of the mandatory Parliament Civics Education Rebate (PACER) institutions. All school programs must be booked.
Free digital excursions
Our fully facilitated digital excursions are highly interactive and aligned to the Australian curriculum. Sessions are engaging, with students having the opportunity to participate in discussions as they explore key themes and heritage spaces of Old Parliament House.
Visit MoAD from your classroom and get students talking about topics including democracy, media literacy, leadership and sustainability.
We currently offer a wide variety of programs tailored for students from Foundation to Year 12.
Opening hours
Onsite programs at MoAD run for one hour and can be booked with start times from 8:30am until 4:00pm. School programs are not available on weekends or most public holidays.
FAQs
National Heritage Listing is recognition that Old Parliament House is one of the most significant heritage buildings in Australia. As the home of Commonwealth Parliament from 1927 to 1988, it was the setting for many major decisions and events that shaped modern Australia and so symbolises and reflects the development of Australia as a nation. -
Please leave all food, drinks (including bottles of water), large bags, backpacks, umbrellas, clipboards, iPads/tablets and pens on the bus.
-
If you are from a local school, please leave large bags at school and only bring lunches in baskets or small containers which can be cloaked until after the program finishes.
-
School visitors are kindly asked to wear provided white cotton gloves for the duration of the program. Exceptions are made for visitors who may feel uncomfortable or have sensory needs.
-
All programs must be booked and are led by a Learning Facilitator.
-
Entry for school programs is located at the front of the building on the terrace to the left side of the main steps.
-
Group numbers will be counted, and digital PACER forms completed at the start of your Learning program. Invoicing is processed after excursions have taken place.

PACER ELIGIBLE PROGRAM
Experience the ways people are heard in a democracy, both through an interactive activity and taking on the role of politicians in an historic debate re-enactment.
Our historic debates challenge students through the use of modified Hansard speeches. Students will either learn the arguments for and against the introduction of conscription during the Vietnam War, OR about a constitutional issue: state versus federal rights and how each approached the topic of the damming of the Franklin River in 1983.

Searching for Significance
This teacher-facilitated learning program has been designed to engage students in years 1-3, through discussion, as they search for symbols, shapes, sights and sounds at one of Australia’s most significant places. Students and teachers will embark on a journey around the outside of MoAD to explore the rich heritage which surrounds the Old Parliament House building, including:
- the Aboriginal Tent Embassy
- Australian Parliament House
- the Australian War Memorial
- the Senate and House of Representatives Gardens
This program connects students with their surroundings; they pause to think about why places are considered significant in their community, who they are significant for and reflect on how they can be cared for. As part of this experience students record their observations and discoveries on a map which can be used to extend discussions and reflections back in the classroom.
