The National Museum of Australia
The National Museum of Australia brings to life the rich and diverse stories of Australia through compelling objects, ideas and events. We focus on Indigenous histories and cultures, European settlement and our interaction with the environment. The Museum offers a range of curriculum-linked programs facilitated by our Museum educators.
The National Museum of Australia is located at Lawson Crescent, Acton Peninsula in Canberra.
The Museum is open from 9am to 5pm every day of the year, except Christmas Day.
Please ensure updated on-the-day contact details for a teacher accompanying the group to the Museum. Please check the School Visits page prior to your visit.
Lunch or recess in outdoor areas such as the Museum Forecourt or lakeside Amphitheatre are welcome.
Schools visiting the Museum can spend up to an hour either side of their booked visit exploring our galleries. Teachers must supervise students at all times.

Frequently asked questions
- To protect the Museum’s collection, we do not allow backpacks, food or drink into the gallery areas. We prefer that students leave their bags on the bus. If that is not possible, limited bin space is available. Water and medications may be carried into the galleries in small bags.
- Cameras may be used in the galleries, however photography is not permitted in temporary exhibitions.
- There are ample areas for students to eat their lunch, including the outside decking area and the lake foreshore.
- We have facilities and services for visitors who have difficulty walking, seeing and hearing.
- The Museum has the ACT’s first Changing Places change room, with a fully accessible public toilet, adult change table and hoist. Unisex accessible toilets, baby change tables and an ambulant toilet are available on the ground floor, from our Gandel Atrium.
- The National Museum has a coach and bus parking area close to the main entrance.
